Mark 5 is tells the stories of three people, who receive healing in spirit, soul, and body. The daughter of Jarius received the healing of her spirit, which had already departed her when her body perished. The woman with the issue of blood received the healing of her body, and the man with the unclean spirit received the healing of his soul, or mind; for when the spirits departed from him, he was calm and in his right mind, who had formerly been a wild man, for the spirits were a torment to him.
The structures in this chapter are two. The first from 5:1-21 tells that Yeshua has authority over unclean spirits; the second from 5:22-43 tells that Yeshua has authority over the infirmities of the body, and even of death.
But in exercising His authority over the infirmities of the body, He does not emphasize His own authority. He says something interesting:
And He said to her: Daughter, your faith has made You whole; go in peace, and be healed of your infirmity. Mar 5:34
While He yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house a certain man who said: Your daughter is dead: why do you trouble the Master any further? As soon as Yeshua heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue: Be not afraid, only believe. Mar 5:35-36
It makes me wonder if there is another structure overlaid on Mark 5 as follows:
1A) 5:34 And He said to her: Daughter, YOUR FAITH has made You whole; go in peace, and be healed of your infirmity;
1B) 5:35A While He yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house a certain man who said: YOUR DAUGHTER IS DEAD;
CENTRAL AXIS) 5:35B WHY DO YOU TROUBLE THE MASTER ANY FURTHER?
2B) 5:36A As soon as Yeshua heard THE WORD THAT WAS SPOKEN;
2A) 5:36B He said to the ruler of the synagogue: Be not afraid, ONLY BELIEVE.
The spoken evil report always countermands the promise of God, doesn’t it? It did for the ten spies spying out the land of Canaan, and it did for the man dwelling in the tombs of the Gadarenes. What made him of an unsound mind? The legion of demons spoke lies from their mouths to him. He couldn’t hear anything else. When they were departed, and their lying lips had been put to silence, he was once more in his right mind.
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and of a sound mind. 2 Tim 1:7
Belief in God, and in His promise, is soundness of mind. Yeshua encouraged Jarius not to put faith in the evil report, which causes fear, but to instead believe – have faith – in the promise of God.
And do you know what? We are not a trouble to our Master!
