Learning English Paper Piecing (May 29, 2023)
Update on my English Paper Piecing project:
I first printed 120 (10 sheets cardstock) honeycomb template papers, and then on a different day, another 120 (10 sheets cardstock) from the same pdf. I discovered when trying to join basted pieces from the two printed batches, that they were two different sizes.
*facepalm*
It turns out the 2nd batch papers were true 1-1/4″ honeycombs while the first batch was larger. I learned the hard way to always print one sheet on computer paper first, and then measure, before printing the cardstock.
I had completed 4 blocks with the too big honeycombs, unbeknownest to me.
- First block done.
- Second block finished.
- Third block finished.
- Fourth block finished.
I took my first block apart (and learned my hand sewing was on point – these blocks were not coming apart with normal wear and tear lol), recut the honeycomb papers to the right size, and resewed it. (I arranged the pieces a little differently – I like the new look better.) The block on the left is made with true 1-1/4″ honeycombs.
Look at the size difference! I have three more blocks to take apart and redo. It seems like a setback, but it is really an advance in disguise. I have learned a lot through this process, as this is my first time ever doing EPP. We learn our best lessons when making mistakes, it seems.
New sizing for the quilt: Each correctly sewn block is 10-1/4″ from point to point. I am planning on adding a border which will equal about 4 inches all told. The finished quilt will be about 65-1/2″ square, which is close to the width of a twin blanket. Perfect!
